Rajkumari Ratnavanti: Empowering Girls and Women Through Design

Creating a Symbolic Space for Education and Empowerment

The Rajkumari Ratnavanti project, designed by Diana Kellogg, is a unique endeavor aimed at addressing gender inequality in rural, impoverished areas. This innovative design combines a girl's school and women's center, providing a space for education and empowerment.

Inspired by the symbolism of ovals, which have long represented female strength across cultures, the Rajkumari Ratnavanti project features three distinct forms. An arc-shaped structure houses the classrooms, while an oculus or "eye" shape serves as the library. The women's cooperative is represented by an egg-shaped structure. These three repetitive ovals symbolize infinity and the power of community to uplift women.

What sets the Rajkumari Ratnavanti project apart is not only its symbolic design but also its use of locally sourced materials. Constructed with hand-cut local sandstone, the buildings blend harmoniously with the curvilinear shapes of the local forts. This design choice not only pays homage to the region's architectural heritage but also serves as a metaphor for the rippling effect that education can have on impoverished areas.

Commissioned by CITTA, a non-profit organization dedicated to building schools and hospitals in India and Nepal, the Rajkumari Ratnavanti project aims to empower girls and women from neighboring villages in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. By utilizing solar energy and incorporating traditional building methods, this project not only provides a modern and sustainable design but also aims to promote the recognition and preservation of these techniques.

Despite its noble goals, the Rajkumari Ratnavanti project faced numerous challenges. It took several years to secure funding and donated property, requiring patience and perseverance. Additionally, designing a structure that was both economically viable for the non-profit and harmonious with local traditions proved to be a creative and technical challenge.

Construction of the Rajkumari Ratnavanti project began in March 2019 and is expected to be completed by February 2020. Located in Jaisalmer, India, this project represents a beacon of hope for girls and women in rural areas, providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

This groundbreaking design has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2019. This accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
